What Hunter-Gatherer Societies Can Teach Modern Health

After spending decades studying hunter-gatherer and foraging populations, including the Tsiman?, I?ve learned a great deal?not only about human health, but about people and how our biology has been shaped over time.

The Tsiman? are a remarkable population?resilient, connected, and deeply aligned with their environment. There is a great deal we can learn from the way they live.

Longitudinal research shows some of the lowest prevalence rates of coronary artery disease, dementia, and obesity ever documented?extending into advanced age. This occurs despite higher exposure to infection and systemic inflammation, suggesting that cardiometabolic health is driven as much by lifestyle as by medical care.

From a physiological perspective, their environment is highly consistent with human biology.

They engage in continuous, low-to-moderate intensity movement throughout the day.

Their diet is high-fiber and nutrient-dense?approximately 2,400?2,700 kcal per day, with ~64% complex carbohydrates, 21% protein, and 15% fat.

They consume over 150 unprocessed foods, where the key factor is not just quality?but variety.

Their sleep-wake cycles align with natural light patterns.

Their social structure supports behavioral consistency, connection, and stress regulation.

Together, these inputs support metabolic stability, vascular health, and functional longevity.

In contrast, modern environments are defined by reduced movement, ultra-processed foods, circadian disruption, and fragmented daily behaviors?factors that directly contribute to cardiometabolic dysfunction.

This understanding directly informs my work.

I focus on translating these biologically consistent inputs into a structured, scalable model:

-Sleep and recovery to restore circadian alignment
-Nutrition to improve metabolic function
-Movement to increase daily energy expenditure with speed and distance
-Behavioral coaching to support adherence and long-term lifestyle change

The goal is not to replicate ancestral life, but to reintroduce the key variables that drive human physiology?within a modern context.

The implication is clear:

Chronic disease is not simply a function of aging.

It is largely a function of environment and behavior.
