It was a beautiful spring day in Australia, September 28, 1969, when residents of the small farming town of Murchison, two hours north of Melbourne, heard a large booming sound. Little did they know, a 4.6-billion-year-old rock, later named the Murchison meteorite, had just rained down on their quiet town.
Because the rock had landed in the daytime and was quickly discovered, its precious cocktail of organic compounds was left in pristine condition.

Carbonaceous chondrites, a subclass of the oldest meteorites in the Solar System, break up as they enter the atmosphere. The large booming sound the locals had reported was the meteorite fragments breaking the sound barrier. This was a very rare occurrence.

Half a century has passed since the fall of the Murchison meteorite, and its scientific significance remains unrivalled. At more than 4.6 billion years old, the Murchison specimen is older than our solar system.

Before our Sun and planets formed, the solar system was a messy disc of gas, dust and debris. The Murchison meteorite is a mixture of some of the chunks that were never collected into a planet or a moon.

Filled with a range of organic compounds, the Murchison meteorite contains ?the very origins of life itself? such as amino acids, water, sugars, and alcohol-related compounds. In other words, the meteorite that hit Australia, delivered the prebiotic building blocks that enabled later life to form on Earth aided by the energy resulting from its impact on earth.

This marvelous and rare meteorite is the most prolific source on our planet, of pre-solar stardust grains which represent material from different ancient stars. What this tells us is that our solar system formed from a multitude of different stars, and we are essentially a product of these stars.

So, what does all of this have to do with water on Earth? Multiple geochemical studies have concluded that asteroids and meteorites are most likely the primary genesis of Earth?s water. Carbonaceous chondrites have isotopic levels most similar to ocean water; making life, along with energy, possible.
