Longevity

The Original Mediterranean Diet Began Before Modern Civilization

Long before modern agriculture, processed food, calorie-counting apps, and GLP-1 drugs, humans lived as hunter-gatherer-foragers deeply connected to movement, sunlight, sleep, whole foods, and nature.

The traditional Mediterranean lifestyle, especially seen historically in Crete, may represent one of the closest surviving models to how humans were biologically designed to live.

The cultural history of Crete goes back to nearly 8,000 BCE, predating even the ancient Minoan civilization, considered one of oldest civilization in Europe. Archaeological evidence from Crete includes some of Europe?s oldest settlements, roads, homes, artwork, and Paleolithic stone tools dating back roughly 130,000 years. Crete was also the legendary birthplace of Zeus in ancient Greek mythology.

It wasn?t simply a ?diet.?
It was:
whole foods,
daily walking,
outdoor labor and strength activites,
sunlight exposure,
clean water,
strong social connection,
low ultra-processed food intake,
restorative sleep,
lots of olive oil
purpose,
and movement integrated into life itself.

When researchers began studying Mediterranean populations in the mid-20th century, they found remarkably low rates of cardiovascular disease, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction despite limited modern healthcare.

The Mediterranean Diet later became globally recognized through landmark peer-reviewed studies such as the PREDIMED trial, which demonstrated approximately a 30% reduction in major cardiovascular events among high-risk individuals following Mediterranean dietary patterns.

More recent research from the PREDIMED-Plus trial showed that combining Mediterranean nutrition with physical activity, behavioral coaching, and weight-loss intervention significantly improved metabolic health and reduced diabetes risk.

The lesson?

The future of health is not simply another diet.
It is helping humans reconnect with the biological systems they evolved to live within.

My philosophy for the past 45+ years has been simple: whole-food nutrition, gait-speed walking, outdoor whole-body functional strength movements, sunlight, sleep recovery, metabolic health, biometrics, interventional and behavioral coaching, and lifestyle medicine.

I believe sustainable transformation happens when you stop fighting human biology and start working with it. Before lasting behavioral change can occur, the body must begin returning toward biological balance, restoring energy, movement, sleep, metabolic function, resilience, and confidence.

Coaching then becomes more than motivation; it becomes a process of helping people reconnect with the way the human body was designed to live, move, recover, and thrive.
